Mary Kay,
you are SO right!
I grew up as an LC in a practice which has a bfdg rate nearly 100%, so not only did I NEVER bottlefeed a baby myself, I really never learned how bottles and nipples work and the differences between them. I have since learned a lot from the LCs and nurses I work with who were old nursery nurses and had bottlefed thousands of babies. Bottles are not inherently bad, they are just another feeding tool, and one which has picked up a bad rep from its association with ABM.
Warmly,
Martha Johnson RN IBCLC

Subject: Musing about Bottle nipples

>>>Catherine's post about bottle nipples points to the fact that we need to
learn about what is available and how differennt bottles/nipples work.>>>>

Please don't beat me for this observation but I'm wondering if sometimes it
would be an OK thing to have vendors at conferences to explain these things.
Banning them completely may have created an entire "generation" of LCs who
don't know about how different nipples work.
I find it frustrating to teach a breastfeeding class and have mothers ask a
million questions about bottles and nipples. But they consider us to be
experts on baby feeding and I try to answer as best I can. (And have samples on
display) It is also frustrating that we have to research this issue on our own
and spend our own $$. (Slightly venting here.) I remember learning so much
about breast pumps and devices from a hands on session with Kittie Frantz.
Nothing replaces actually seeing and handling a product.
