When I worked as a WIC BFing Peer Counselor program coordinator, we had the
cliient sign a contract which ended with this statement ..."Failure to return
this product is a class ( I forget the number) Felony in the state of North
Carolina. I understand that I will be prosecuted by the sheriff for failure
to return the pump." We also got information on employer, nearest relative,
etc. The Peer Counselors would call to check on BFing progress at least twice
a week and that helped to keep track. We also flagged the chart and if they
came in for formula, they had to bring the pump back before getting a full
package. We also used DSS sometimes to help retrieve pumps. We never lost a
pump but we had two returned to us by bus on different occasions. We only had
to turn over one contract to the sheriff for collection and it came in the
same day she received the summons.
As a private rental station I had one disappear with a military mom. I tried
to go through military channels to get it but she had moved too many times
and we gave up.
If you have one that is missing, when you report it as stolen, ask that it be
put on the report that goes to the pawn shops and flea market owners.
