Referral for information is probably good for the 95%, too. Mothers who
come to LLL meetings before the birth of their baby tell us afterwards
how valuable it is. Others tell us they wish they had. Because prenatal
information is often given quite late, and mothers are told to wait
until the last month for breastfeeding or even prenatal classes so they
won't forget it when the time comes (a suggestion I find demeaning, by
the way) they often don't get a chance to prepare themselves
psychologically for the experience of mothering and breastfeeding. My
suggestion would be for the ob/gyn to mention community resources early
and follow-up, "Did you call .... ?" Even a phone-call is helpful.
Mothers feel more comfortable talking about difficulties if they have
connected first.
