I certainly agree that a hospital policy ought not disqualify someone from
performing duties based on their gender. Still, sensitivity to the
perceptions, needs, and rights of patients is appropriate. A woman, man or
child might prefer a particular gender because of cultural or religious
beliefs, a history of physical or sexual abuse, etc. We may never know the
reason for the preference. I know several women who were told by a health
care provider that they ought not have such a preference when they
requested a female health care provider or technician for an exam or
diagnostic procedure. This treatment in many cases led them to delay
seeking health care after that point--which is not a good outcome.
