Hi Renate and all,

First, "drsgs" means "dressings", that is, "bandage" of any type, including
hydrogel and gauze, etc.

Although I use a brand other than Duoderm, here's how I use the hydrogel
dressing: I use the kind that comes in 2 inch by 2 inch (or 4 inch by 4 inch)
pads. (Hydrogel is also available in a powder). I cut a circle to fit the
size I need to cover, plus a margin. For nipples, I also make a cut from the
edge of the circle to the middle of the circle, so that the dressing can make
a cone shape and more closely fit the nipple. Then, depending on the
"stickiness" of the brand, I might "dab" at the area of the dressing to be
applied to the skin with a clean finger, to reduce the "stickiness" if it's
likely to pull when removed. I have the patient remove the dressing for
feeding or pumping and reapply same dressing within a 24 hour period (since
it's not a contaminated wound). Be sure to mention that if the dressing seems
really stuck, gently soak it off by dripping water on an edge, then peel
slowly, drip again, etc...NEVER PULL!!

Most moms that I used this with are very happy with the healing and also with
just how good it feels. Staff nurses have asked to have this stocked on the
unit. I have resisted this (and have been supported by my boss) because my
feeling is that if the patient has nipples that are THAT sore, the mom needs
to be seen by the IBCLC!

Hope this helps..
