It certainly is disheartening to see the formula banner at Dr. Sear's web
site. The banner espouses the storebrand formulas which is manufactured by
Wyeth. Wyeth is the first formula company to pursue GRAS status at the FDA
for DHA in formula. When they were refused, Martek oils picked up where they
left off. Martek oils supplies its brand of oils to various infant formula
companies besides Wyeth. Martek also sells it supplemental DHA that is
marketed to breastfeeding mothers which Dr. Sear endorses (as well as
mentions in his breastfeeding section). Martek has gotten funding from the
National Academy of Sciences to produce genetically engineered oils. They
also have several patents which state that their oils may some time in the
future be genetically engineered (one of those patents was written in the
early 90's). All and all, very disheartening turn of events. Valerie W.
