Margery,

I am so sorry to hear of your situation and that you are no longer going to
be an IBCLC. You are one of the good ones we need so desperately in our
field. It is very upsetting to me, quite honestly, that this is happening
to you - or to any of us for that matter.

As an IBCLC in private practice I truly understand the challenges of trying
to earn a living. As a single mom I rarely make enough to make ends meet -
I have no RN even if our local hosptals would hire a non-RN IBCLC (which
they might), I wouldn't work for one anyway - I don't have the patience or
fortitude to deal with the crap that the rest of you deal with on such an
alarming basis. I'd be the one getting fired for telling someone off I
shouldn't because they gave out the wrong information and compromised a BF
dyad or some Dr decided to write me up for telling a mom her baby had a T-T.
So, instead I choose to struggle and often feel like giving up but realize
that I don't like working for the other man, and I love what I do - so am
struggling to make my business better. Maybe I will maybe I won't. It is
the moms I work with privately who keep me going. The ones who remind me I
made a difference in their worlds and that they wouldn't be BF their babies
if I hadn't been there to help them.

I do understand what it feels like to be banging your head repeatedly
against that proverbial wall.I am tired of it myself as I seem to be doing
it a lot these days. I hate that there are IBCLC's in my area who shouldn't
be - ones who make errors that just don't make sense (ie: obvious tongue tie
- no referral for clipping or evaluation; clear and obvious
sucking/swallowing issues (like aspiration!) that are missed or ignored);
IBCLC's who keep a mom coming back to them week after week for months rather
than refer out to someone else who can help the mom sooner - dealt with this
one 3 times in the past 2 wks - moms seeing someone weekly with little
progress - I see them at my mommy group and say "Here is the problem, do
this and you'll be fine," - and they are! Simple things that should have
been corrected within 1-2 visits; or the IBCLC's who don't bother to answer
their phones or return phone calls. They give us a bad name and I hear
about it ALL the time from the moms. One of my moms called the same couple
LC's 8 times in 2 weeks - never got a call back.go figure. I do not
understand that type of behavior - never have - never will.

So - for those of us still out there we just have to keep trying as long as
we can. Hopefully, the powers that be (whoever your deity is) will help us
along, give us the strength we need to keep fighting and make that one final
push that will put BF and IBCLC over the edge where we finally get the
recognition we deserve and the IBCLC's who shouldn't be will fade away into
the dust or catch a clue and learn something real and get better.

Am I having a bit of a bitter day? Sure - one of our own had to say "Done".
It isn't right, it isn't fair - and I feel so very much for her - I wish you
well in your journey's Margery. I don't blame you.I get it. Now you have
to take care of yourself. So I wish you luck and take care!

Warmly,

Jaye
