I found the information on rusty-pipe syndrome in Ruth Lawrence's text book,
Breastfeeding A Guide for the Medical Profession, 4th edition (1994). To
quote, in part, "...bloody or serosanguinous secretion in either pregnancy
or lactation. ...usually bilateral, although onset might be
unilateral...most began at birth and in early lactation...Most cases cleared
within 3 to 7 days of onset of lactation...distinct from trauma, cracked
nipple or mastitis...explanation for this is probably the increased
vascularization of the breast coupled with the rapid development of the
alveolae."
