Just been speaking to LC who saw my baby today with facial palsy.
Gained 80 gm since yesterday.
In a nutshell:
Had a speech therapist review baby-agreed with what I found yesterday. In
fact had difficulty getting this baby to move it's tongue at all. Very
little action at the breast. Better with the Avent teat. Digital suck
assessment: Tongue movement better if tip of finger placed well posteriorly
(which is what I found yesterday, all the more reason to get that teat in as
far as possible I think)
Suggested/tried Habermann, mum not too enthusiastic so decided to continue
with Avent. Suggested nipple shield, didn't do all that great with that
either. (but I wasn't there to see how she used the shield). Also suggested
try a dummy (pacifier) to encourage sucking.
No noticeable hoarse cry today. (I will check this out again tomorrow)
Feels it is more likely trauma not 'absence of depressor angularis'.
Tongue tie slight, tongue does have a short look about it, suggests snipping
may even make things worse. Suggests review by "experienced" person if going
to snip. Being assessed by Paediatric Consultant on Monday as he wasn't in
today. (We have a 'tongue tie trial' going so all tongue tie babies are seen
on the Monday anyway-but that's another story - sigh!)
Basically no change in plan from what I had suggested yesterday, other than
adding the dummy.
Will see mum tomorrow.
Thanks again for all suggestions/comments
