Yes Sara, it is or at least untill recently quite a national routine. Babies
who seem to have swallowed meconium containing amnoitic fluid are stomack
suctioned. While the tube is in there anyway, it is not uncommon to give a
shot of glucose, for the baby is apparently in stress and just might need
some extra sugar.
Of course this is only thrue for hospital born babies. Midwifes in homebirth
settings (about 1 third of all births) donīt do gastric lavages.
