Dear Friends:

I just watched "What Babies Want", the DVD.

There is a section so relevant to our work. The scene is a baby born and
suctioned at birth that gets scared. The baby fusses and cries every time it
goes to breast, because there is fear linked with its mouth. The mother
interprets this in a variety of ways, and it may turn into a 'breastfeeding problem'.

So much of what we see in our work with troubled dyads is the result of the
disconnection and injury at birth in our hospital factories. When we consider
that babies are awake and aware and feeling during pregnancy, that they are
learning about their world during their growth and formation, what is going on
in hospitals as routine becomes even more shocking.

I didn't know that the USA leads the world in drugging its children; that
the US lead the world in pediatric Ritalin use. How can that be alright?
(Remember that 'common' can be light years away from 'normal'.) The rates of
pediatric suicide as a leading cause of death have increased over the past 50
years; what is this about?

Pregnancy and birth matter to babies, both states prepare them for life
outside.

I have no financial interest in this film. And, after watching it, and
weeping as I was reminded of my own births, I am thinking about ways to bring it
to my community.

warmly,
