I also have strong reservations about clipping the tongue of every tongue-tied
baby routinely. I believe that initial post even suggested without parental
consent. While it is a minor surgical procedure, it is not without risk of
complications, including infection, excessive bleeding and glossoptosis (tongue-
swallowing) It seems to me, that whenever you perform an invasive procedure
on an infant, the parents deserve a full informed discussion of the risks v
benefits. I am the mother of two fairly significantly tongue-tied children, who
both breastfed beautifully, never caused me a drop of pain and turned rapidly
into plump little marshmallows. They both had trouble with their "r" sounds but
by age 8, both were able to make the sound. While I would have appreciated
someone pointing out that there might be a problem due their tongues, either
with breastfeeding or speech, and tellilng me what to watch for, I would not
have consented to having their tongues snipped at birth. And had a
complication arisen due to the procedure and it were done without my
consent, I would have been outraged!!!

Interestingly, my tongue was clipped at birth 51 years ago, to prevent speech
problems, with my mother's consent. This following a delivery where they were
trying to give her anesthesia without her consent, she was restrained and
telling them she didn't need it and still they were trying to give it to her.
Fortunately I shot out before they could get it on her!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank
goodness we have come a long way since then. Let's keep moving in the right
direction of informed consent.
