Kym's post on the baby that's weight had stalled reminded me of a
similiar case I had a few years ago. Kym mentions a heart-shaped tongue
which leads me to believe that this baby has some degree of tongue-tie.
And she also mentions that the mother had sore nipples, plugged ducts
and mastitis early-on. In the situation I had a few years ago, the baby
had an undetected tongue-tie and around six-weeks began to show problems
with weight gain. What I think happened was that as long as the mother
did lots of nursing sessions(mother complained that baby needed to nurse
constantly) the infant was able to gain weight. When the mother decided
that she wasn't going to sit all day and nurse the baby(because the baby
at the last weight check had gained weight), the baby's weight started
to falter. Kym mentions in her post that the baby nursed throughout the
1 1/2 hours of her visit(another sign that all is not well). I do
believe that babies who are not gaining weight well or are starting to
fail-to-thrive, are less capable of nursing well--tiring easily. Their
suck deteriates making the situation worse--snowballing effect. It is
possible that this baby has an undetected health problem and hopefully
will be checked out thoroughly by an hcp.

If the baby checks out well health-wise, I think the tongue-tie maybe
the root of the problem. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
