Arly, I agree wholeheartedly.  I wonder what would happen if welfare
"reform" included adequate paid maternity leave for *all* mothers and good
child care for those who returned to work.  Do you think this has anything
to do with the relative higher female presence in the governments of the
Scandinavian countries as opposed to ours?  (Would anyone think that 92
women and 8 men would be appropriate representation in the Senate?)
