I have been helping a mom of premature twins and I am stumped. She came to
me last week with a boy and girl 9 weeks old. born at 33 weeks. At nine
weeks the mom comes to me exhausted and at the breaking point. She was
trying with some success to get the babies latched on, trying to make the SNS
work for her, and pumping 8 time s a day. She stated she could not keep up
all of theese tasks, and I don't blame her. She was at this time unable to
coordinate feeding both babies at the same time. I got her a pillow for
twins and managed to get them both on for a feeding in my office. She left
very encouraged. I gave her permission to drop the pumping as she thought
this was what was stressing her the most, and she was still having to
supplement the babies with formula via the SNS and with bottles. She came
back in today, and is just a exhasperated as last week. Both babies nursed
today at the breast for me to see. Both babies suck and swallow for 5- 10
minutes, but then are not satisfied and require supplementation afterwards.
The mom thinks that she can't do the SNS anylonger, too hard to manage with
the two babies etc. Here are my questions and please make any and all
suggestions you can.

I think it is possible for this mom to nurse theese babies at the breast at
each feeding and then follow with formula to sustain growth as needed?

I think as the babies get bigger and more efficient at nursing they will
increase moms milk supply on their own. Right?

Can mom abandon all gadgets at this point and have a hope of ever exclusively
breastfeeding her infants?

This mom got off to a very rocky start, and then comes to me to fix it. Can
this be fixed and what would your collective recipes for fixing be?

feel free to ask questions I will respond.

Jessica
