Recently I met a mother who is returning to her job in Mongolia when her
baby is a few months old. She has an older child but he was weaned before
the family left for this post. I said something half-joking during the
pediatrician's exam about making sure she breastfed this baby until, say,
age 4, if they were going to be living somewhere where water isn't always
reliably clean and access to food is uneven, at best. She was startled, and
then asked a lot of questions, and got plenty of information about the
miraculous resource she produces in her own body.

She also said that it was not uncommon to see children of 12 years old
breastfeeding in the place where she lives in Mongolia, though she didn't
anticipate doing so herself.

Sounds like Dr. Phil could do a Mongolian tour and rake in the bucks,
advising these people about how to stop giving in to their childrens'
demands. Too bad for Dr. Phil they have nothing to pay him with, and
nothing to watch his show on.
