Hi all,

My So. Illinois BFTF is planning a conference & grand rounds in the fall.
Some of you may remember my plea for suggestions for a white, midwestern,
rural-focused MD to speak to the physicians in this wasteland of bf
ignorance. :-)

We have invited Dr. Cheston Berlin (thanks, Gail Hertz!--dropping your name
is what "snagged" him!), who is on AAP's advisory board on drugs &
chemicals.

In discussing topics to address, I asked him if he could talk about
contaminants in breastmilk. His response was, "No, but I can talk about
'chemicals' and 'foreign substances' in breast milk. To call them
'contaminants' implies that the breast milk is unsafe, & in the majority of
cases, it's still safer than formula."

I'm finding it's taking a bit of effort to get the word "contaminants" out
of my vocabulary, but I think his point is well-taken: our choice of words
with parents & healthcare professionals can have a greater impact on their
view of bf than we might think. And, we need to start by listening to how we
talk w/each other.

Happy Humor Month!

Smiles,

Carol
