susan
these formulas are truly hypoallergenic, from what i have read about them. i
beleive there are statements on aap website re infant formula and use of
hypoallergenic formula. for example, carnation good start (comfort proteins)
says they are hypo but not really. so if you do not want to sensitize or
risk allergy in any bf baby that needs supps then nutramigen or alimentum
would be the choice (competing companies). if this risk is very small, for
ex,no family history, then your hosp may not want to incur the extra cost or
the family to have to cont. to buy the higher priced formula. in other words
it is a risk vs benefit thing. donor milk is even better, you could make the
argument for that. however this can be costly and difficult to obtain for
supps. unless there is a milk bank nearby or yhou could tell this doc we
need to start a milk bank, if he truly wants hypoallergenicity. hope this
makes sense. very late, very tired.
