My son was developmentally delayed, so asked for "umm" when he wanted to
nurse. He spoke his first sentence when I ran down to the washing
machine for a second, leaving him standing behind the safety gate at the
top of the stairs. First he tried calling "mama, mama", and when I did
not come right back, he tried "Umm, mama" in a plaintive voice. He knew
if he asked to nurse, he would get what he needed!

My daughter called it milk, which she pronounced "mulk". She nursed for
47 months, so when we were someplace where I did not want to nurse her,
I told her "we 'have milk' at home". Everyone else thought I was saying
I left the milk home, but she knew what I meant and could usually wait.
