<< Any ideas on what may be causing an extremely painful letdown in a mom
whose
baby is 3 months old? It has occured since her milk first came in. She has
tried warm compresses, nursing freq, and Diflucan. There is no hx of breast
trauma that she remembers. She had some clogged ducts and painful letdown
with her first baby 4 years ago, nursed the 2nd child 2 years ago with no
pain or problems, and now with this one the first 20 seconds of nursing is
excruciating. She is about to call it quits. Even if we can't sort out the
prob, she would like to get in contact with anyone who has experienced this.

Personal experience....from about 3 wks pp till about 3 1/2 mos, every time I
experienced a letdown, it felt very much like someone was swinging a bat and
smashing it into my breasts. I also had oversupply issues. I dealt with the
oversupply issues, and this seemed to diminish - nursed very frequently, but
on one breast for 2-3 hours...then switched....I slowly spread this out to 6
hours on one side. After a little while (can't remember the details) of doing
this my supply had reduced sufficiently and my letdown seemed to feel
'normal'. At this point (18 mos), I can barely feel it- sometimes more than
others..... the 'more' times occur when baby hasn't nursed in a long time and
my breasts are very full....

Her situation may or may not have anything to do with supply issues though..
