I am following the current discussion about tongue ties with great
interest. I suppose that I am fortunate to work with a pediatric group
which supports early clipping of the ties (and did, before I was gaining
expertise in lactation issues). The physicians here have always done the
clipping themselves, and now I do it too. We have never used anesthetic,
and I question the need for it. The infants never cry once we have taken
our hands out of their mouths and put them to breast. The mothers often
(nearly always) report instantaeous relief and the infants have better
feedings.

It doesn't make sense to me to spend precious time trying to make things
work without clipping if the delay means that mom and baby will be
suffering and losing ground establishing the milk supply.

I wonder if there are training seminars in place for physicians who want to
learn the procedure. This may be a good place for lactation specialists to
expend some energy.

All the best for a very happy New Year!
