I sometimes tell moms it's like deciding what the baby should breathe.  Of
course, clean air is best, but you wouldn't opt for blowing smoke in baby's
face just because you're tired, or think he might not be getting enough due
to increased feeding during a growth spurt.  (After all, you can't measure
the clean air he breathes, but you can see the smoke disappear up his nose!)

This is also a good analogy to use with colleagues when discussing the
"guilt" issue.
Tell the moms, "Of course clean air is best, but if you just can't manage
to provide that, then smoke is almost as good!"
