Today I had a Sri Lankan mother tell me that eating bitter melon is a
common galactagogue in her culture. And indeed (in addition to her pumping,
frequent feeds) her milk production has gone way up since she started it.
When I look it up online, there's lots of lay sites warning against eating
it during pregnancy or breastfeeding (a lumping together that I usually
regard as 'evidence of no evidence' regarding lactation). It also has uses
similar to fenugreek & malungaay (lowering cholesterol, blood sugar
regulation, etc) which seems common among some plant galactogogues.
So what do you Asians know or think of the use of bitter melon in lactation?
Thanks,
Susan Lawrence RN, IBCLC, LLLL
