Never stop breastfeeding to start Pedialytre or any other oral rehydration fluid (ORF), when your baby has diarrhoea and/or vomiting. We went through this extensively here in Trinidad in the early 80's when diarrhoea and vomiting were rampant and we were having 2 to 3 deaths per week on our "special" hospital ward set up to treat children with diahhroea and vomiting. We used to insist that mothers force the fluid down the childrens' throats. ORF is indeed life saving and the program we then set up undoubtedly helped decrease mortality but we quickly learned that children over the age of one year, who are not dehydrated, refuse ORF and prefer to drink breastmilk or some other "home" rehydrating fluid eg plain water; coconut water; orange juice and they do as well as anyone else, especially if they continue eating. The dehydrated ones drink enough ORS to rehydrate their water and electrolyte losses and then stop drinking ORS, want to drink and eat other things. Breastmilk is food and drink for them. Before dehydration; during dehydration and after rehydration.

David
