I just received the free Baby Talk magazines that I am "supposed" to give out at the classbirth classes for the health dept. (June/July issue).
There is an article entitled "When Breast (and Bottle) is Best, by Donna Jackson. The picture inside is a 2 page spread. The breastfeeding mother is looking down at her baby's foot, very depressed looking, with a bfing baby looking very quiet. The other page shows the same mother bottlefeeding, happy and smiling with a smiling baby.
The article quotes Dr Neifert about the 5% of women who cannot produce enough milk, and also her findings about women with small breasts who have to breastfeed more frequently due to "their breasts may not hold enough milk and they have to nurse more frequently increasing the chances of nipple sores, cracks and bleeding". There follows then Dr Neifert's recipe for triple feeding which builds up the milk supply. Her recommendatin includs temporarily limiting nursing to 10 min to each side, then having the dad or someone else feed a bottle to satisfy the bay, then pump for 10 min to remove residual milk. Repeat.
There is a sidebar article entitled "Confused about Nipple Confusion" with her and Dr Sargent who says they don't have problems in their practice with nipple confusion.
There is also a lead paragraph stating " Okay before an army of lactation consultants rises up in protest...". Several stories abut mothers with problems who became happy and well adjusted after switching to a combination of bottle and breast. One mother was working with a lactation consultant who told her she wasn't sure the baby was getting enough milk but not to supplement. She was told to pump and use a SNS. Finally the ped told her to supplement immediately and "although the lactation consultant had warned her not to, she felt she had exhausted all other options. Almost immediately the situation improved".

Check out the issue. It also contains a coupon to subscribe to " The Very Best Baby " magazine which is free from Nestle. Ads include also a full page ad for Carnation Follow up with Calcium ( title is "Rolling OVer is easy when you've got the good nutrition i Follow up with extra calcium helping you along"). Other articles incude a Q & A about Bfing and Breast cancer, and 5 ways to save on baby food ( no mention of bfing). Another article on " 10 Things every new parent needs includes " A Gorgeous Nighgown you can nurse in".
Guess ya'll can guess where these magazins are going.
