I was reading one of those gossip rags at the salon today, and at least two
celebrities were quoted making positive comments about breastfeeding. One
comment was about how easy it was to lose the baby weight because of
breastfeeding, the other was just a general positive comment about
breastfeeding being such a positive experience.
In our narcissistic, immediate-gratification, pop-culture-obsessed society,
maybe we are missing a great opportunity to change attitudes about
breastfeeding.
If we could get more "cool" celebrities to speak up about its benefits, and
emphasize some of the physical benefits for the mother - losing the baby
weight, flattening the tummy, and temporary larger breast size - maybe we
could get more young mothers on the bandwagon.
This is, obviously, written very tongue-in-cheek, but heaven knows, what we
have been doing so far really isn't working very well. Maybe it's because we're
not taking the right approach. Let's try appealing to a mother's vanity rather
than appealing to her sense of what's right for her baby and see if we have
better results.
