The suggestion to attend LLL meetings for a quick pick-me-up is an
excellent one. I look forward every Friday morning to the Nursing Moms
Support Group here at the hospital. How many of you hospital-based LCs
offer a support group to your moms? It's one of the first things I
initiated when I started here. I think I need it as much as the moms.
It's so refreshing to see the babies week to week growing and thriving on
their mother's milk! And it's wonderful for the staff to see "their" babies
weeks and months down the line doing very well on mom's milk. Gives the
skeptical staff something to think about as they deal with breastfeeding
management in the hospital. And we spend very little time actually
discussing breastfeeding per se! The mothers totally run the group (they
decided my function is to hold babies when moms have to go to the
bathroom!) and discuss everything from the best brands of diapers to co-
sleeping to their baby's upcoming christening to who offers the best photo
packages. They take turns bringing treats and also have begun trading
clothes (both mom and baby) asnd baby paraphenalia. I'm working on
planning an outdoor picnic which should be fun as the hospital sits on a
260 acre wooded campus.
Thinking about the support group has just made my Tuesday!
