Article on Jaundice in "breastfed" infants (quotes are mine; these babies were "pretending" to breastfeed)

"Developmental Follow-Up of Breastfed Term and Near-Term Infants With Marked Hyperbilirubinemia". Pediatrics, Vol 107, No 5, May 2001, pg 1075ff

Babies with high bilis >25 mg/dl, admitted at avg of 5 days of age. 5/6 infants in this group had abnormal neurological signs; followup exams over next 2 years showed resolution of abnormal signs in all but 1 infant. Infants treated aggressively with partial exchange transfusion, phototherapy, etc. Weight loss from birth weight ranged from +2% (1 infant) to 0% (2 infants) to -7%, -10%, -18%.

My opinion is that this study should make us all aware of how important followup in the first few days after hospital discharge is for babies and how important good assessment of breastfeeding is.
