Reminds me of the many years I spent on the11-7 a.m. shift. I knew full
well the feelings the scriptures describe when comparison is made to
"like the sentinels wait for the dawn"!

It was imperative to get up and move around rather than stay at the desk
trying to chart. Those eyelids just weighed too much otherwise!

It was a great time to bend over a bed and help a mother and baby who
were having trouble learning to breastfeed, however. That always held my
attention! But I could go home and try to squeeze in some rest then. I
had no office hours or surgery scheduled for the next day!

I suppose that fact alone plays heavily into the thread of augmentation
and induction. Even if one is a steady night worker, it is often
difficult to concentrate at that hour.

For HCP's who have office hours/surgery scheduled during the day and want
to be able to concentrate their best, I can understand why they feel the
need to build some manageable structure into their lives.

Nearly 50 years ago, doctors had one of the highest rates of fatal heart
attacks in the prime of their careers. I remember seeing in my hospital
at that time the beginning of attempts to form group practices, nights on
and off call, etc. as a means of self-preservation for the doctors.

I also remember reading a small booklet published several years ago by
the American Nurses Association about the higher risk of developing
hypertension and other health sequelae of nurses who had done years of
night shift work.

Perhaps the controlled use of breast pumps as a first line of induction
might contribute to hitting a happy medium. Over 25 years ago, there was
Israeli research to show that an added result of such inductions was
"early arrival of a copious milk supply with little or no engorgement."
