Hi Everybody:
One of the chemical triggers, among many, to stimulate secondary
lactogenesis is the drop in progesterone after delivery of the placenta. So
giving a synthetic progesterone, progestin, would interfere with this
mechanism if it was given in the first few days after birth. This might be a
reason for a drop in milk supply. I like the idea of testing the waters with a
progestin-pill first, as Dr. Jack suggests. Something else for people to
consider is the potential liability when a medication is given against the
manufacturer's advice.....it is recommended to hold off on hormonal methods of
contraception for six weeks postpartum. LAM will do the same for women, for at
least 6 weeks, and might be another incentive for exclusive breastfeeding:
imagine a birth control method that is free, has no side effects, and is
loaded with health and parenting benefits! Warmly, Nikki
