We`ve spoken about this before. I like the broad backgrounds we bring to
lactation consulting. I think it is great to have a learn-as-you-go,
learn-what-you-need process. I wouldn`t have wanted to go back to
university. I wouldn`t be in this profession today if I had had to be,
because I would have had to move away from my busy volunteer "practice"
to find a university to teach the course. I wouldn't have left my family
to attend class, although I was thrilled to be able to study at home at
the same time as I was practising and learning and living in the
community. Even if people rush to enrol in Lactation Consulting
Sciences, there will still not be a separate degree offered in
Fredericton for a while (though I have some ideas about who could teach
it!) I prefered to be able to study intensively at home, next to my
nursing toddler, and to model something essential for my teenagers: when
you get a degree in the humanities, especially an advanced degree, you
learn how to learn. You learn how to listen to people and understand
them. You learn how to do research. You learn how to be adaptable enough
to learn things in disciplines you hated in high school. You learn how
important it is to look at people creatively, compassionately and
carefully. You learn to love intellectual challenges, thought-provoking
discussions, and well-founded and well-articulated ideas.

of those useful things), and Cert. Trans. 2001; also: volunteer BF /
peer support 1994, public health peer support training 1998, LLLL 1999
(attending since 1993, just slow to apply), IBCLC 2001, place of
practice: home; particular interests in: writing, volunteer counselling,
research, education, training.
