Hi Lactnet!

This is my first post to Lactnet. I am an RN, I have worked for 11
years in the NICU/NBN, with the last 1.5 yrs in Mother-Baby care. I am
currently working in an Allergy/ENT office, with two other nurses who
are pro-BF, so we manage to talk to our patients about BF and actually
offer help to our pregnant pts, our pt's pregnant wives, and even the
drug reps!

On a postive note, a few weeks ago I attended a baby shower for a lady
at Church, and gave her a breastfeeding shirt as a gift. I included my
phone number and told her to please feel free to call me if she ever had
any questions. This lady and I grew up together, but she was about 6
grades ahead of me in school, but we knew each other from the schoolbus
(small private school!) and Church. She delivered at Presbyterian
Hospital of Dallas, where she says she got GREAT BF help and
information! (Thanks, Presby!!)

At about 10 days, her baby suddenly, in the middle of the night, decided
not to BF anymore from one side, and only poorly from the other side.
She did call me the next morning and asked if I'd come to her house to
help. Of course I did, wondering on the way over if I'd be able to do
something after not being around newborns for almost 2 years.
Fortunately, with the addition of a pillow to help Mom with positioning,
Little One went right back to the breast without any signs of her
refusal from the previous night! While I was there, Baby's 20yo
half-sister came to visit, and asked if it was really such a big deal to
BF, why not give formula since it is as good as breastmilk? After
giving a few simple facts about the superiority of breastmilk (thanks to
Coach Smith's cards!), and pointing out that if her Baby Sister had been
bottlefed, we would have certainly tried changing her position if she
had suddenly refused to eat, Big Sister suddenly blurted out, "Oh, I've
got to learn this breastfeeding thing! Can I watch?" (as she dragged
her chair over to watch her Baby Sister eat!) A minute or two later,
looking lovingly at her little sister, she said, "I wonder why I ever
thought I'd give formula. I won't ever have a calf or a soybean for a
baby!" At that point, Little Nursling had to be re-latched as everyone
burst out laughing!!

Mom reported to me today that Baby has gained over a pound this week and
grown a little over an inch!!! YAY!!!

old, Mommy. Then I will be big enough. Nunny milk makes big muscles on
my arms!"
