Dear Friends:
The magic of the SNS lies in the placement of the tubing. It must stick
out a little beyond the nipple so that when the baby takes the breast, the
tubing goes into the back of the mouth, along with the nipple. When the baby
suckles, that posterior mouth space fills; if it fills with mamma's milk,
then nothing is taken from the tube. If there is no mamma milk, the negative
pressure will drain some milk from the tube. The breast is being stimulated
either way.
This way, a mother can see her supply increase as the baby takes less
and less from the flask.
     Warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MSN, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
