I don't have the reference, but I remember the New York Times running a
piece a while back on how components in breastmilk shut off a switch to
start
menses that would get flipped earlier in girls who were not breastfeeding.
My
daughter and her friends who were breastfed, though not all exclusively,
got
their periods later, at more normal ages, like 12ish, though there were
variations in families etc.

Peace,
Judy

My formula fed daughter (soy formula) started her menses at 10. But her
genetic history on her father's side also has the trend of early development and
menses beginning early.

I have an extended breast fed daughter who will be 4 in June who never had
formula and breastfed for 3 years 1 month and 3 days and I'm really interested
to see if the breastfeeding can override the genetics that we see at play in
our families.

All anecdote at best, but still interesting.
