Dear Friends,
I'm trying to track down the references for two statements about the
economic benefits of breastfeeding. They are a) that it takes 110 billion
BTUs of energy to make and transport a year's formula in the United States,
and b) that 550 million cans of formula are used each year across the
U.S.A., adding 800,000 pounds of paper and 86,000 tons of metal to the
waste stream.
I found the '550 million cans' figure in the 1997 action folder for World
Breastfeeding Week, so I don't think it's a recent reference.
Can anybody help me? Please reply directly, as I am "No Mail" on Lactnet.
Cheers,
Chris
