Wise ones, help me understand the "nipple sandwich". I think I am just not
getting it, or maybe it is being taught wrong around here.

It seems my local hospital is teaching ALL mothers to use the nipple
sandwich (C hold sandwich not U hold). The last two mothers I did home
visits with because baby was not latching well, were doing this and told me
that they were told to do so by the nurses in the hospital. BOTH of them
were changing the shape of their nipples, and their fingers were ON the
areola, making it very difficult for baby to get a deep latch. Both of
these mothers achieved far better latches when they left well enough alone
about the sandwich and instead focused on proper positioning.

Now, I was given to understand that the nipple sandwich was a technique to
be used IF something wasn't working right. Not as a standard practice.
Here it seems to be taught as a standard practice and it seems to be messing
things up, as least with the moms that I see.

What think you?

Blessings!
