This briefing is written by Judith Richter and is based on her book, Holding Corporations Accountable: Corporate Conduct, International Codes and Citizen Action

Briefing: "Codes in Context: TNC (Transnational Corporations) Regulation in an Era of Dialogues and Partnerships"
by Judith Richter, February 2002

As corporations have expanded beyond their national borders, it has become harder for individual countries to protect public interests through national regulation alone.

But instead of laws at the international level, industry self regulation or co-regulation is often considered the best way to set global rules. This briefing paper challenges the effectiveness of voluntary approaches.

By drawing on a case study of the infant food industry, it raises crucial questions about efforts to make TNCs publicly accountable at a time when dialogues and partnerships are often regarded as the best way to interact with them.

The briefing is available in several formats: as PDF (107 KB), RTF (142 KB), Word (223 KB) or Text (97 KB) file.
