This drug is in the latest edition of Hale (98-99). He states that a
small study showed that the baby would get less than 0.4% of the
maternal dose. It is unlikely to be a problem.

But this brings back the question. Why this drug? Why do physicians
always choose the latest drug, often completely unnecessarily. I will
bet dollars to doughnuts, not knowing anything about the situation,
that this mother's infection would be quite nicely handled by any
number of other antibiotics, much cheaper, for that matter, than this
new fluroquinolone. Why this drug about which there is so little
experience?
