A friend of mine who writes for Today's Parent (a national Canadian
parenting magazine) is looking for research about why women wean their
babies earlier than recommended. He's not looking at initiation (which is
quite high in Canada) but trying to find out the reasons for discontinuing
earlier than the recommended "two years and beyond." What are the barriers?

He thinks he saw some earlier research that suggested returning to work was
a big factor. Apparently, there used to be a big drop in numbers in Canada
at 6 months when maternity leaves ended at 6 months, and he wondered if
there is research to show breastfeeding lasts longer now we have 1-year
maternity leaves.

He's also wondering if there is any research suggesting that Baby Friendly
hospitals lead to increased duration (not just initiation) and what the main
barriers hospitals (esp. in Canada) experience which prevents them from
becoming Baby Friendly.

Any help would be much appreciated! You can email me privately if you
prefer.
