I just found out Domeperidone is available in the U.S. for veterinary use,
specifically for horses!!!!!!!!!!
A salesman who came into my office found out my husband is a vet and
immediately started recounting his woes with his latest mare who has no milk
for this foal. (Everybody thinks I must know what my husband knows, Well I've
absorbed a bit, but he knows more about lactation from living with me, than I
know about veterinary medicine from living with him) Mare has had several
foals before. Sometimes she has plenty of milk and sometimes she does not.
(Interesting, don't you think) He says he thinks part of the problem is she
was foaling out of season, as most are born in the spring, BUT also there are
some toxins in certain grasses, fescue in particular, that can affect her
milk!!!!!!!!!!! (also can cause abortions) If this affects animals could
there be anything that affects humans like this??
Anyway, vet has prescribed domeperidone for the horse!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now we just have to get it approved for human use in the U.S. Using it now
would be "off label" use, but they do it all the time for other things. My
husband says about 75% of the drugs he uses are "off label" or not officially
approved for the way vets use them, and I have also heard this about pediatric
drugs. The great majority are used because of the doctors experience, not
because of double blind, controlled studies for children.
