Jennifer: Amen to your comments about how delightful it is to nurse an
older baby! And yours isn't even a year old yet! As you probably know, it
continues to just get better! I think many of us get hung up on the early
days of nursing and forget (or maybe don't know) to inform the mother on
how nursing will just get better and better (and easier)as time goes on. I
like to tell moms that nursing is 90% a mind game and only 10%
technique/nutrition, especially once she gets past the learning period.
This is why it disturbs me so much to see moms (and some LCs) put so much
emphasis on pumping. Or the mother who says she just wants her baby to get
her milk. The whole point of nursing is being missed with a mindset like
that. Which is why my entire practice focuses on anticipatory guidance -
help the mom get into the proper mindset and the early learning phase gets
easier for her and encourages her to continue. The new programs/services
that I have developed since coming to my present hospital focus on ongoing
support: our very popular and successful mom's support group (we now have
35 moms who attend on a pretty regular basis - fortunately not all come
every week), our "Beyond Breastfeeding Class (meant for the mom/baby who
are at least 1 month PP), our still in development breastfeeding
clinic/retail boutique. If anyone else is doing something different to
promote long-term breastfeeding, let me know, as I'm always looking for new
ways to help moms to nurse longer.
