With our "warmline" I find that many calls don't really need an
inpatient consult, such as: storage and thawing of mom's milk, where
to rent a pump (after exploring the reasons to see if they indicate
a consult need), what our references (primarily Hale) say about a
particular med, and often just reassurance that what they are
feeling/experiencing is normal. I have a kind of rule of thumb that
if it's taking 10 minutes or more, she needs to come in based on the
time alone. (Of course there are some that are obviously in need of
person-to-person help in the first few seconds of a call.) Often it
has been our willingness to give some suggestions over the phone
that leads to a mom being willing to come in for a consult if her
concern isn't resolved, or for future concerns. I will have to see
more info on the listing to know whether or not we will
participate. Have people received a mailing or something?
