I'm a little behind on postings, but wanted to respond to this issue.

First, the parents, I believe, had in writing orders that baby was only
to get breastmilk. I'm assuming there was no consent given for formula.
Wouldn't this constitute a medication error? Who started the formula?
Nurses on own or on MD orders?

Second, they have a great lawsuit. There is plenty of research out there
regarding an association btw. NEC and formula. Too bad she doesn't have
the strength to do so.

Third, as Jennifer pointed out, it is very hard for parents to negotiate
the US hospital system. It is intimidating to say the least. NICUs are
very stressful places. My youngest was in one for 2 days and it happend
to be where I work. I got lots of special treatment and it was still
difficult. (she never had formula or a bottle!) I can understand a
mother not wanting to alienate the neo. All she probably wants is to get
her baby home. At this point she would stand on her head to get baby
home.

Fourth, if hospital had required parents to sign a consent form to
administer formula, maybe they wouldn't be so quick to do so.
