Re: Dawn's mom with sore breasts and nipples. I'd suggest tx of the
nipples with topical antibiotics on the chance that she has a bacterial
(staph) infection. This can create pink nipples and pain. Try
investigating the "fit" between her nipples and the size pump flange she is
using to make sure she isn't aggrevating the 'rug burn' by a too-tight fit
with the pump flange. Sounds like the burning in the breast when full could
be related to an inflammatory mastitis. Again, if the pump is too tight,
she may not be thoroughly draining the breasts and that residual milk could
be creating inflammation. The constant tx for thrush could also have
triggered a topical dermatitis. Use of a steroid cream to calm things down
might also be prudent.
