Hi, this is my first time to post a question about a challenging case and am
hoping someone can help. I have a mother who is breastfeeding exclusively a
two month old. . The baby nurses every 2-3 hours for 10-15 minutes each side
and seems satisfied. The baby weighed 8-14 at birth and now weighs 18 pounds
and 14 ounces. The only thing that she has reported is that the baby wheezes
for a short time in the morning and the evening but is fine during the day and
at night. Mom denies congestion or any other symptoms when the wheezes occur.
Her pedi told her that the weight gain was way too much and could be causing
problems. She wants her to eliminate a breastfeeding and subsitute it with a
water feeding. The pedi also said that she wants to a Upper GI and a chest
xray to rule out a shift of the trachea to the right. I am perplexed by this,
don't know enough about excessive weight gain, I have tried to look up but
resources deal with poor weight gain. There is mention that breastfed babies
do gain faster initially but then level off although this baby's weight gain
does seem like alot. However the family is a tall big family not really
overweight but husky. The baby is off the chart for the head and weight and
the height is at least 100 percentile. The mom doesn't want to eliminate one
feeding doesn't feel that baby will go for it. Does anyone have any
information about excessive weight gain? Has anyone ever heard of weight gain
causing a trachea shift to the right? Has anyone out there seen this type of
weight gain ? Causes or management of it? I would be grateful for any
information. TIA.
