Hi Samantha,
What a challenging case! Of course, who wouldn't be concerned about the
child's vitamin levels and other nutrients, but this is not a normal
situation. If the child is given other foods, and even some vitamin
preparations, and certainly the fortifier, these could provoke a severe
reaction. What fortifier is the supervisor thinking of anyway, that is
"hypoallergenic," and does she realize that "hypoallergenic" does NOT mean
"this will never cause an allergic reaction."
I am hopeful that the child, who is under the care of a doctor
(pediatrician?) and allergist, is being monitored for growth, nutrient
deficiencies, and development, and will have food challenges under highly
controlled and supervised conditions. I think it would be fine for the RD
who is concerned to contact the doctors to clarify and discuss the orders.
Everyone who can share their particular knowledge and concern would do so
to help the child and family. Collaboration is a good thing.
This is certainly not my area of expertise, so keep that in mind and I do
hope this family gets the emotional support they surely need in such a
difficult situation.
Does the mother directly breastfeed and/or express? If you can share that.
