Dear Jan, and everyone,

When my daughter was about 5 months old I was invited to a baby
shower at the home of someone I didn't know. I brought my daughter,
since I was finally getting the hang of the attachment-parenting that LLL
had been talking about. Since I was still new at attaching, I apologised
to the hostess about bringing Amy, but explained that she went everywhere
with me. The hostess expressed delighted surprise at this, and told me
that I was raising my daughter "The Japanese Way".
My neighbor, who is from Japan, (and is trying to have a family)
has delicately asked me about how I handled infancy. She had been in the
home of friends who put their children to bed, closed the door, and
proceeded to socialize (and wouldn't respond to their children after
bedtime). I was able to reassure her that we're not all like that.
The Japanese way makes so much more sense than The American one.
