Thanks, Sue. I don't think we'll be examining babies in the rooms anytime
soon. We just got new windows that give the rooms a nice green tint.

Oh, well.

Joyce

Subject: In defense of Joyce and the 5S's

I read (with amusement) Joyce's initial post re: Dr. Harry Karp's
"swaddling method" - I could only imagine her excitement in getting all
those bundles calmed down. We all know what is right and where those babies
want to be and should be. The fact is all across America - babies are being
held captive in nurseries - so when the pediatricians wander in - they can
examine "their" babies. I applaud Joyce for caring enough to swaddle them
up and comfort them. S0- what about the warming bed for temp control - I
love that one! - or - worrying about a baby's blood sugar. Hello! put
the baby on moms breast - let's get some action going here.
So what are a nurses options? We could all wage a rebellion! There you
go. Where is an organization like the AAP through all of the issues
surrounding trying not to compromise mother/baby bonding, skin-skin and
breastfeeding. I can't understand why physicians are not changing some of
their practices. Are their any physicians out there with ideas on how to
diplomatically create change in the nursery (like get rid of it) It would
be much more time efficient to see the baby in moms room. Sue Majoris
