I believe the opposite.  When I hear "formula", I think of scientists in a
laboratory mixing up something AWFUL.  (Picture horror movies where there
are bubbling, steaming beakers and mad scientists.)

I refer to it as formula because most other people know what you're talking
about. True, it is artificial, but calling it formula is still my choice of
words.  It doesn't make us sound so snobby, imho.
