Laurie: Point well made and taken. Professions struggle with this issue as
they become more sophisticated. It is well past time we get this one of
standardized education taken care of, and we are doing just that. As one of
the few LCs who has a degree specifically in lactation, I bless each day that
I had that kind of mentoring and structure. It enhanced my practice beyond my
wildest dreams! And I am a believer that we need to go in that direction and
as soon as we can possibly make it happen on a large scale. It will take time,
however.

In the meantime, the making it up as we go along part has its value. It keeps
us honest, fresh, excited, involved. It is a dynamic process that is pushing
forward the envelope in its own way. BUT, if we don't keep our eye on the ball
it may get away from us. I certainly don't want anyone but us to determine
what standard we practice to and what our scope of practice should be.What the
consumer needs is what we should deliver. We should stay prepared to respond
to that demand, IMHO.

I think we've done a great job of doing just that. Let's give ourselves a big
pat on the back!!
